Still working on the poem, To A Friend Whose Work Has Come to Nothing<\/em><\/a> by William Butler Yeats.\u00a0 Here’s what I’ve memorized so far:<\/p>\n

Now all the truth is out,
\nBe secret and take defeat
\nFrom any brazen throat,
\nFor how can you compete,
\nBeing honor bred, with one
\nWho were it proved he lies
\nWere neither shamed in his own
\nNor in his neighbors’ eyes?
\nBred to a harder thing
\nThan triumph, turn away…<\/p>\n

Here’s another example of how looking for patterns can make memorizing a poem easier.\u00a0 This time the pattern is a lovely line of alliteration.\u00a0 The last word of the line that starts with the word bred<\/em> is thing<\/em>.\u00a0 The first word of the next line is than<\/em>.\u00a0 Two words next to each other beginning with t (th really) provide a nice way to tie the next line with the one before it.\u00a0 Then, how handy that the next two words also begin with t.\u00a0 Patterns like that make a line very easy to remember.<\/p>\n

The last word, away<\/em>, illustrates another memorization technique (Poem Memorization Tip Number 17).\u00a0 Away<\/em> starts with the letter A and follows a word starting with T.\u00a0 Sometimes well-known phrases with the same initials as the words I’m trying to memorize come to mind that help me remember the words.\u00a0 In this case T & A, of course, reminds me of tits and ass.\u00a0 I know, I know: you were so hoping this blog wouldn’t sink to these kind of tactics just to get more readers\u00a0 (I hope you took my advice and put the kids to bed before reading this), but guess what?\u00a0 I memorized this line (starting with a row of four T’s and ending with T&A) in a jiffy!<\/p>\n
