Me:<\/strong> Honey, I dropped by the kids’ dorm to see how they’re doing.
\nMy Wife: <\/strong>Well, at least they had one week on their own without daddy fussing over them.\u00a0 Honestly, you need to give them a little space.
\nMe:<\/strong> I s’pose.\u00a0 They seemed glad to see me, though.\u00a0 Really, they did.
\nMW:<\/strong> O.K.\u00a0 If you say so.\u00a0 So how were they?
\nMe:<\/strong> Actually they were o.k.\u00a0 A few looked a little peaked but most were healthy and happy.
\nMW:<\/strong> Well that’s a mercy.
\nMe:<\/strong> No kidding.\u00a0 I have to say I was a little worried about them.\u00a0 I think they had a rough week of it.
\nMW:<\/strong> Really?\u00a0 What happened?
\nMe:<\/strong> Well, none of us expected the cold, cruel world to have gotten quite so cold.\u00a0 They had several very chilly nights this past week.
\nMW:<\/strong> Any worse for the wear?
\nMe:<\/strong> Don’t think so.\u00a0 A couple looked a little pale from the cold, but no damage done.
\nMW:<\/strong> Anything else?
\nMe:<\/strong> Oh my yes.\u00a0 Two straight days of heavy rains really waterlogged their dorm room.\u00a0 They’ve set everything out so it dries faster.\u00a0 Nothing a couple days of sunshine can’t cure.\u00a0 Still, all that water was far more than they expected and more than they had ever experienced.
\nMW:<\/strong> Poor things.
\nMe:<\/strong> No kidding.\u00a0 Also the winds.\u00a0 It’s been a very windy week which, frankly, was what worried me the most.\u00a0 Even with the necessary few days to\u00a0adjust to the mean ole world, last week was tough.\u00a0 Honestly, they looked amazingly good.
\nMW:<\/strong>\u00a0I’m glad to hear it.\u00a0 Did you do anything for them while you were there?
\nMe:<\/strong> We talked for awhile.\u00a0 Got ’em laughing.\u00a0 Oh, and I almost forgot to mention, I cultivated the soil between their rows and planted some onion sets.\u00a0 They said they wanted a little diversity.\u00a0 All lettuce, all the time, even with three varieties, red leaf, Bibb, and Spotted Trout, gets old.\u00a0 Soon, they’ll have friends from a different culture.
\nMW: <\/strong>That’ll be good for them.\u00a0 College is supposed to broaden your horizons.\u00a0 What about the spinach down the hall with their parties at all hours of the night?\u00a0 Are they keeping our dear ones up past their bedtime?
\nMe:<\/strong> Nope.\u00a0 They’ve settled down.\u00a0 Same with the radishes next door.\u00a0 Too much homework.\u00a0 Besides, they’re not the babies they once were.\u00a0 Many of them, radishes and spinach, are starting to get their first true leaves.\u00a0 You know, moving beyond the cotyledon stage.\u00a0 With leaves come responsibilities.
\nMW:<\/strong> O.K.\u00a0 You know, I’m glad you went there.\u00a0 Glad our little ones have an attentive father.
\nMe:<\/strong> And I’m glad they’re doing o.k.<\/p>\n
