{"id":1984,"date":"2011-03-24T21:42:37","date_gmt":"2011-03-25T02:42:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/?p=1984"},"modified":"2011-03-26T05:26:35","modified_gmt":"2011-03-26T10:26:35","slug":"pansies-a-true-misnomer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/?p=1984","title":{"rendered":"Pansies: A True Misnomer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>How did the word pansy ever come to  mean weak and ineffective?\u00a0 There must be a fragile plant whose name  better deserves this honor like, &#8220;Hey pal, don&#8217;t be such an orchid!&#8221;\u00a0 (I&#8217;m  guessing orchid growers will tell me how vigorous that plant is, too.)\u00a0  I plant pansies in October, that I buy during the height of fall at the  Saturday market.\u00a0 Not only do they maintain a few blooms all winter, but in the spring they practically explode with flowers.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2080\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMG_8460.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2080\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2080\" title=\"Already beautiful by the end of March\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMG_8460-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMG_8460-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMG_8460-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMG_8460.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2080\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">After a long, cold winter<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more-->I have seen pansies that, after being under two feet of snow,\u00a0 continue to bloom after the snow has melted!\u00a0 Last year I covered lettuce and herbs with  plastic that wasn&#8217;t wide enough to include the pansies and protect  them from direct contact with the snow.\u00a0 Those poor, naked plants endured under high, heavy  drifts for weeks.\u00a0 To be sure, when the snow melted, the plants were flattened to the ground,  but the leaves and many of the blooms started to perk up even in the  tepid, winter sun.\u00a0 After a month of warmer spring weather, pansies are laden with blooms.\u00a0 I plant them about a foot apart in fall, knowing how they&#8217;ll fill the space the next spring.<\/p>\n<p>These brave, hardy souls give me pause and  encouragement.\u00a0 I love the unlikely, the beautiful and precious in the last place you&#8217;d expect, and pansies are nothing if not  that.\u00a0 Who could imagine such persistence, such staying power?\u00a0  Actually, we should tell mountain climbers and marathon runners,  doctors, nurses and other human services people who work long shifts  through the night: &#8220;You are such a pansy.\u00a0 I really admire that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Instead of calling a grueling triathlon the Ironman, it should be called the Pansyman.\u00a0 Instead of the  Iditerod, the Pansiterod.\u00a0 I&#8217;m thinking the pansy will be the new flower  I put on my family crest.\u00a0 Look to the pansy.\u00a0 Be like a pansy.\u00a0  Pansy-fy your life and go far!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2054\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMG_6780.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2054\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2054\" title=\"After near Arctic cold and deep snow\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMG_6780-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMG_6780-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMG_6780-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMG_6780.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2054\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Toughness Incarnate<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How did the word pansy ever come to mean weak and ineffective?\u00a0 There must be a fragile plant whose name better deserves this honor like, &#8220;Hey pal, don&#8217;t be such an orchid!&#8221;\u00a0 (I&#8217;m guessing orchid growers will tell me how &hellip;
