{"id":4650,"date":"2011-08-17T06:45:48","date_gmt":"2011-08-17T10:45:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/?p=4650"},"modified":"2011-08-17T06:45:48","modified_gmt":"2011-08-17T10:45:48","slug":"smith-recognized","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/?p=4650","title":{"rendered":"Smith Recognized"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Imagine my pleasant surprise to learn Smith was to be given an award.\u00a0 As I&#8217;ve mentioned, gardeners, though seemingly nice and mild-mannered on the outside, are really cutthroat, fierce competitors on the inside.\u00a0 We want the biggest and most tomatoes, bushels of cucumbers and peppers, glamorous deep purple eggplants, and to be the one with an odd, exotic variety no one else is growing.\u00a0 At least I know I do, but I&#8217;m pretty sure I&#8217;m not alone.\u00a0 My first year gardening here, Smith was recognized.\u00a0 Last year, it wasn&#8217;t and while that was disappointing, I don&#8217;t blame the judges.\u00a0 A long, dry summer and a few missteps on my part made the plot completely lackluster.\u00a0 This year was different with the plants practically bursting forth from Smith, vigorous, healthy, attractive.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4720\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_0572.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4720\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4720\" title=\"The glory days of summer\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_0572-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_0572-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_0572-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_0572.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4720\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Smith at judging time<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The community garden brass would be handing out the award certificates at the annual picnic, which we attended for the first time in my three years of gardening there.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s the email sent to the award winners:<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><em>Hello fellow gardeners!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Your plots have been selected by the Master Gardener Judges for recognition this year!<\/em><em>\u00a0 Your gardens scored high based on creativity, design, maintenance, use of flowers, health of plants, diversity, and productivity.\u00a0 It was a tough year in the garden, with a wet spring and a scorching, dry summer.\u00a0 Your plots thrived and caught the attention, and in come cases, inspired, our master gardener judges.\u00a0 You each have contributed to the beauty of the garden and your gardens represent what our judges think a community garden should be at its best.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>You will each receive a certificate recognizing your achievement this year as gardeners.\u00a0 (No, no enormous cash prize, sorry.)\u00a0 I hope you all will be able to attend the picnic tomorrow and collect the certificate in person; share some delicious food and good times with your fellow gardeners; and, give the rest of us tips on how you create and maintain such wonderful gardens.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll be honest and say it made this proud garden papa feel good to be receiving recognition.\u00a0 I&#8217;m pretty sure gardening success includes a healthy bit of luck when it comes to weather, garden pests, and how a particular variety of plant will do in a particular location.\u00a0 But this moment allowed me to admit, o.k., I guess I know a little something about tending a garden.<\/p>\n<p>The picnic was surprisingly fun.\u00a0 Nice people brought colorful, delicious dishes of food prepared from fresh garden produce.\u00a0 Afterwards, a few master gardeners made remarks about gardening in general and community gardening in particular.\u00a0 Surprising to hear all that&#8217;s going on in the world of gardening: seminars, advanced learning, volunteer opportunities.\u00a0 Then the certificates.\u00a0 I was a little embarrassed when they called my name, but I went forward to be given the award.\u00a0 Smith had been selected\u00a0 the First Runner Up Garden in the Use of Flowers.\u00a0 At first I was a tiny bit disappointed that it was an award for flowers.\u00a0 I like using and having flowers in the garden.\u00a0 While we eat fresh produce, we enjoy looking at a vase full of fresh, pretty blossoms.\u00a0 Still, I would have said my main goal is growing vegetables, or at least planting a nice combination of good looks and good eats.<\/p>\n<p>I realized I was being recognized, in a sense, as an artist.\u00a0 I consider the garden a canvas and the plants, the colors and textures I splash on it.\u00a0 That a group of experienced master gardeners liked my use of flowers in the context of the vegetable garden is, in a way, a small validation of my artist&#8217;s eye, my sense of what&#8217;s beautiful, evocative, interesting.<\/p>\n<p>A tomato competition (biggest, smallest, best tasting, oddest shape) provided the roller coaster, nail biting, photo finish to the day, but by then I had slipped away from all that excitement to the peace of Smith.\u00a0 There was a bucket of tomatoes to pick and squash and peppers to water.\u00a0 And yes, there were also nicely planted and arranged flowers to admire.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4722\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_0763.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4722\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4722\" title=\"First Runner Up for the Use of Flowers\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_0763-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_0763-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_0763-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_0763.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4722\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Proud Artist-Gardener<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Imagine my pleasant surprise to learn Smith was to be given an award.\u00a0 As I&#8217;ve mentioned, gardeners, though seemingly nice and mild-mannered on the outside, are really cutthroat, fierce competitors on the inside.\u00a0 We want the biggest and most tomatoes, &hellip;
