One is the last two verses of To a Louse.\u00a0 In the poem, Burns is sitting in church behind a well-dressed young lady when all of a sudden he sees a single louse clambering up her garment.\u00a0 The poem goes over how strange to see such a repulsive creature in such a fine place, not what you&#8217;d expect.\u00a0 Then, the last two verses, while not about hypocrisy directly like the first two poems, touches exactly on the difference between appearance and reality.<\/p>\n<p>O Jeany, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertburns.org\/works\/glossary\/526.html\">dinna<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertburns.org\/works\/glossary\/1712.html\">toss<\/a> your head,<br \/>\nAn&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertburns.org\/works\/glossary\/1417.html\">set<\/a> your beauties <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertburns.org\/works\/glossary\/4.html\">a&#8217;<\/a> abread!<br \/>\nYe little <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertburns.org\/works\/glossary\/1008.html\">ken<\/a> what cursed speed<br \/>\nThe blastie&#8217;s makin:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertburns.org\/works\/glossary\/1664.html\">Thae<\/a> winks an&#8217; finger-ends, I dread,<br \/>\nAre notice takin.<\/p>\n<p>O wad some Power the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertburns.org\/works\/glossary\/773.html\">giftie<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertburns.org\/works\/glossary\/769.html\">gie<\/a> us<br \/>\nTo see oursels as ithers see us!<br \/>\nIt wad <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertburns.org\/works\/glossary\/720.html\">frae<\/a> mony a blunder free us,<br \/>\nAn&#8217; foolish notion:<br \/>\nWhat airs in dress an&#8217; gait <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertburns.org\/works\/glossary\/1771.html\">wad<\/a> lea&#8217;e us,<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertburns.org\/works\/glossary\/40.html\">An&#8217;<\/a> ev&#8217;n devotion!<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Would some power the giftie gie us, indeed.\u00a0 Guarding against hypocrisy shouldn&#8217;t have to be done by some clever poet, but should come from within.<\/p>\n<p>And finally, one I sang at last year&#8217;s Burns Supper, <em>For A&#8217; That And A&#8217; That<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>What though on hamely fare we dine,<br \/>\nWear <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertburns.org\/works\/glossary\/909.html\">hoddin<\/a> grey, an&#8217; a that;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertburns.org\/works\/glossary\/769.html\">Gie<\/a> fools their silks, and knaves their wine;<br \/>\nA Man&#8217;s a Man for a&#8217; that:<br \/>\nFor a&#8217; that, and a&#8217; that,<br \/>\nTheir tinsel show, an&#8217; a&#8217; that;<br \/>\nThe honest man, tho&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertburns.org\/works\/glossary\/592.html\">e&#8217;er<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertburns.org\/works\/glossary\/1371.html\">sae<\/a> poor,<br \/>\nIs king o&#8217; men for a&#8217; that.<\/p>\n<p>Ye see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertburns.org\/works\/glossary\/1916.html\">yon<\/a> birkie, ca&#8217;d a lord,<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertburns.org\/works\/glossary\/1833.html\">Wha<\/a> struts, an&#8217; stares, an&#8217; a&#8217; that;<br \/>\nTho&#8217; hundreds worship at his word,<br \/>\nHe&#8217;s but a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertburns.org\/works\/glossary\/415.html\">coof<\/a> for a&#8217; that:<br \/>\nFor a&#8217; that, an&#8217; a&#8217; that,<br \/>\nHis ribband, star, an&#8217; a&#8217; that:<br \/>\nThe man o&#8217; independent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertburns.org\/works\/glossary\/1159.html\">mind<\/a><br \/>\nHe looks an&#8217; laughs at a&#8217; that.<\/p>\n<p>Again, he had no use for so-called lords, as he put it, acting all high and mighty.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Strip away pretense and hypocrisy and people are just people, that&#8217;s why.\u00a0 What Burns wanted, what he dreamed of, was a world where people were equal and where there would be no need for false fronts or incongruous words and behavior.<\/p>\n<p>Then let us pray that come it may,<br \/>\n(As come it will for a&#8217; that,)<br \/>\nThat Sense and Worth, o&#8217;er a&#8217; the earth,<br \/>\nShall <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertburns.org\/works\/glossary\/125.html\">bear<\/a> the gree, an&#8217; a&#8217; that.<br \/>\nFor a&#8217; that, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertburns.org\/works\/glossary\/40.html\">an&#8217;<\/a> a&#8217; that,<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s coming yet for a&#8217; that,<br \/>\nThat Man to Man, the world o&#8217;er,<br \/>\nShall brothers be for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertburns.org\/works\/glossary\/4.html\">a&#8217;<\/a> that.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Let&#8217;s briefly visit two more poems.
