{"id":4794,"date":"2011-08-23T06:59:44","date_gmt":"2011-08-23T10:59:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/?p=4794"},"modified":"2011-08-23T13:34:09","modified_gmt":"2011-08-23T17:34:09","slug":"water-photo-captions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/?p=4794","title":{"rendered":"Water Photo Captions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Practicing an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow, for heaven\u2019s sake<\/em>.\u00a0 (Kurt Vonnegut, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Man Without a Country<\/span>)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4802\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_6820.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4802\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4802\" title=\"At Montfair in Virginia\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_6820-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_6820-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_6820-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_6820.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4802\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Snug mountain pond<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When you read the phrase <em>practicing an art<\/em>, you think: what?\u00a0 Painting fine pictures?\u00a0 Sculpting statues?\u00a0 Writing a best-selling novel or an article published in a national magazine?\u00a0 These are all examples of art, all goals that some people reach.\u00a0 For a lot of us, we love artistic expression, we sense we have an artistic bent, but wonder how someone who is not a professional artist, whether writer, sculptor, painter, dancer or whatever, can do art.<\/p>\n<p>Art is expressing reality through the prism of a person&#8217;s eyes and ears.\u00a0 An artist is someone, and can be anyone, interpreting the world around him or her, voicing a feeling, or expressing a response to some thing, person, or event.\u00a0 Kurt V. said practicing an art no matter how well or how badly is still a really important thing to do because it makes your soul grow.\u00a0 It expands a person in a foundational, important way. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>A big part of <em>The Life Literary&#8217;s<\/em> goal is to model and encourage doing art with words, expressing feelings and responses to the world literarily.\u00a0 This is why I&#8217;m showing you seventeen pictures I took of water.\u00a0 This collection demonstrates two artistic actions.\u00a0 These scenes caught my eye because they show water in interesting contexts.\u00a0 My snapping these shots was an artistic action.\u00a0 Then I wrote a caption for each photo, a sentence or a phrase to capture something about the picture or about my reaction to it, or maybe my attempt at a word play, like &#8220;indirect ducks&#8221; two words that sound similar, not quite a rhyme but close.\u00a0 That&#8217;s the second artistic action.\u00a0 I&#8217;m pretty sure none of the pictures are award winners, nor the captions, Pulitzer prize nominees.\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t matter.\u00a0 I&#8217;m practicing an art, enlarging my soul, and having fun doing it.\u00a0 These are good enough for me to enjoy and, I think, for a few others too.<\/p>\n<p>Consider adding a bit of literary to your life by adding captions to pictures you have already taken.\u00a0 Or consider grabbing your camera and taking shots of something that interests you like water or flowers, or people, or perhaps the architectural features of buildings.\u00a0 Express yourself and react to the world around you by practicing an art, no matter how well or badly.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Water you talkin' 'bout, brothah?\" href=\"http:\/\/thelifeliterary.smugmug.com\/Water\/Water\/18443778_H2zR7P\" target=\"_blank\">Water Pics<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Practicing an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow, for heaven\u2019s sake.\u00a0 (Kurt Vonnegut, Man Without a Country) When you read the phrase practicing an art, you think: what?\u00a0 Painting fine pictures?\u00a0 &hellip;
