{"id":4817,"date":"2011-08-27T05:28:45","date_gmt":"2011-08-27T09:28:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/?p=4817"},"modified":"2011-08-27T05:28:45","modified_gmt":"2011-08-27T09:28:45","slug":"a-literally-serious-word-from-the-blogger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/?p=4817","title":{"rendered":"A Literally Serious Word from the Blogger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If every use of the word literally were an alien, we&#8217;d be literally overrun, taken over by that large and growing crowd.\u00a0 The human race is clearly outnumbered by the number of times this word\u00a0is used.\u00a0 If the vast multitude, the literal throng of literallies\u00a0were to rise up and demand control of the planet,\u00a0we earthlings would have to surrender.\u00a0 We&#8217;d be\u00a0literally outnumbered!<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not just now noticing the overuse of the word literally.\u00a0 My wife and I, glancing occasionally at this or that on television, have been literally amazed at the amount people\u00a0use this word.\u00a0 We roll our eyes every time it happens.\u00a0 Given how much that&#8217;s been, I&#8217;m surprised our eyeballs aren&#8217;t stuck in a sort of derisive upward glance.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m commenting now because of the news coverage we were watching after the earthquake a couple of days ago and what I&#8217;m expecting in the aftermath of the hurricane (and the volcano next week).\u00a0 <!--more-->Honestly, literally everyone from the-person-on-the-street-being-interviewed to even the newscasters themselves, who literally should have known better, were using the word literally.<\/p>\n<p><em>My eyes literally popped out of my head when I saw the light start to swing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We literally dashed out of the restaurant when it started to shake.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I\u00a0literally jumped out of my skin when the earthquake was happening.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It was literally an amazing experience.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Of course my first reaction to all this was literally wrong.\u00a0 I at first thought, you didn&#8217;t literally jump out of your skin.\u00a0 You figuratively jumped out of your skin.\u00a0 I thought literally is when something is just like something else, as in: &#8220;The word\u00a0tonsillitis literally means inflamed tonsils.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0That, at least, was my first reaction to what seemed to be a misuse.\u00a0 Then I looked it up in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Garner&#8217;s Modern American Usage<\/span>, plus read this <a title=\"The trouble with literally\" href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/id\/2129105\/\" target=\"_blank\">article about the word literally<\/a> and learned that we (and by we I include Mark Twain and Charles Dickens) have been using <em>literally<\/em> as <em>figuratively<\/em> for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>So what about this hurricane of usage I&#8217;ve been rolling my eyes at lately?
