An odd bit of word play I engage in from time to time is collecting words.\u00a0 Here is the second portion of my collection of pub names which I gathered during a one-month trip through England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales in 1999.\u00a0 You can read the first portion and an introductory letter in Collecting Pub Names, Part 1<\/a>.\u00a0 Reading over these lists again, I want to study the origins of pub names.\u00a0 For example, why is the word “arms” used so much?\u00a0 One of my favorites from this portion of the list is The Coventry\u2019s Arm\u2019s Free House.\u00a0 I like the two possessives in a row.\u00a0 As a garden-guy, I also like The Slug and Lettuce.<\/p>\n

A person could collect all kinds of words, from book titles, to puns, to misused adverbs one hears on television, to words with four syllables or more, to names that begin with Q, to, well, anything, really.\u00a0 Consider treating yourself to a new notebook and beginning your own word collection.<\/p>\n
