{"id":6268,"date":"2012-02-06T14:13:37","date_gmt":"2012-02-06T19:13:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/?p=6268"},"modified":"2012-02-06T14:13:37","modified_gmt":"2012-02-06T19:13:37","slug":"taking-leeks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/?p=6268","title":{"rendered":"Taking Leeks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I harvested the final 2011-planted garden crop\u00a0on the first weekend of February, 2012.\u00a0 Even without a homestead of\u00a0our own, without a root cellar where I would store the potatoes, carrots, squash and turnips I would\u00a0have\u00a0grown to sustain us during the winter months, we still can enjoy fresh things from the garden in winter.\u00a0 This past Saturday I\u00a0took about 15\u00a0leeks from (not in)\u00a0the garden.\u00a0 Many were fully an inch or more thick and just as long and perfect\u00a0as you&#8217;d see in any market.\u00a0 Their roots\u00a0grew so thick and deep, I could not simply pull them out without breaking them off.\u00a0 I carefully dug with a garden fork to get them out of the ground, then pounded the roots on the fork to loosen all the heavy, clumped soil.\u00a0 I loved having my hands in\u00a0the garden\u00a0again, after these past winter months away from it, though they got red and numb from the\u00a0cold, moist soil.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6269\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/IMG_3874.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6269\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6269\" title=\"Pungent, onionish, leeky goodness\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/IMG_3874-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/IMG_3874-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/IMG_3874-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/IMG_3874.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6269\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Freshly harvested leeks in February<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more-->What an aromatic ride home accompanied by newly\u00a0harvested leeks!\u00a0 I love their distinct and gentle aroma\u00a0that filled\u00a0the van with earthy, oniony smells.\u00a0 I&#8217;m surprised they lasted so long in the soil.\u00a0 I planted the seeds early\u00a0last March and they grew slowly and gradually all season.\u00a0 In November, I mounded extra soil around their stalks to protect them from freezing.\u00a0 As it turned out, my precaution was hardly necessary.\u00a0 Actually, had I been the hotshot gardener I\u00a0like to\u00a0think I am, I would have\u00a0piled soil around the leeks last summer to encourage the stems to blanch (get pale or white) and grow longer since the stem is what gets used.<\/p>\n<p>Was it ever fun harvesting a crop in early February!\u00a0 Even more than that,\u00a0these leeks\u00a0became\u00a0an intersection of my garden and literary interests since\u00a0my wife\u00a0used them (the leeks, not the literary interests)\u00a0in the Cock-a-leekie soup we served at the <a title=\"Robert Burns Days are Here Again\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/?p=6182\" target=\"_blank\">Burns Supper<\/a> on Saturday.\u00a0 Next year maybe, I will be able to harvest homegrown turnips or potatoes\u00a0to make into\u00a0<a title=\"Turnips, Leeks, Lady Fingers (So Obvious!)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/?p=563\" target=\"_blank\">tatties and neeps<\/a>.\u00a0 For now, it is\u00a0time to start seeds indoors for spring plantings, the new growing cycle beginning even as\u00a0the former one\u00a0ends.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I harvested the final 2011-planted garden crop\u00a0on the first weekend of February, 2012.\u00a0 Even without a homestead of\u00a0our own, without a root cellar where I would store the potatoes, carrots, squash and turnips I would\u00a0have\u00a0grown to sustain us during the &hellip;
