{"id":643,"date":"2011-01-25T14:35:45","date_gmt":"2011-01-25T19:35:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/?p=643"},"modified":"2011-02-15T20:21:51","modified_gmt":"2011-02-16T01:21:51","slug":"response-to-a-nyt-editorial-about-robert-burns-150-word-version","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thelifeliterary.com\/?p=643","title":{"rendered":"Response to a NYT Editorial about Robert Burns (150 word version)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(I wrote the first version before finding out that the NYT has a 150 word limit on letters to the editor.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s the edited version, less than half the length than the first.)<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"wpGallery\" title=\"NYT Editorial about Robert Burns\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/01\/25\/opinion\/25tue4.html?ref=opinion\" target=\"_blank\">NYT Robert Burns Editorial<\/a><\/p>\n<p>To the Editor:<\/p>\n<p>I will agree it&#8217;s fun to give haggis a kick in the hurdies* from time  to time.\u00a0 It\u2019s definitely an acquired taste.\u00a0 I wish the editorial, <em>A Night of Food and Song<\/em>, had not grouped Burns&#8217; poems in the same category.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m a college-educated speaker of American English who reads and  memorizes Burns poems and songs. Yes, they use some unfamiliar words but  with a glossary at hand, it doesn\u2019t take long to read and enjoy his  work with relative ease.<\/p>\n<p>Use the anniversary of Burns&#8217; birth to encourage people to sample his  works instead of writing them off as too difficult.\u00a0 He had a keen eye  for the human condition and a lively sense of humor.\u00a0 What he wrote  rings true.
